Dr. James Popp has been with us since the beginning. Dr. Popp consulted with us about setting goals and the progression of Kya’s treatments the first year of her life. We decided to proceed with her first arm surgery when Kya was a year old. Dr. Popp has successfully seen Kya through two surgeries. His diligence has contributed to Kya gaining the use of her left arm for feeding and writing.
A recent concern is the inward rotation of Kya’s right arm. Instead of hastily attempting surgery, Dr. Popp sat down with us and analyzed the potential benefits and detriments. He also contacted colleagues in Louisiana and Pennsylvania for consultations about the best treatment method for Kya. Although our family may have to travel to one or both of these states for an in-person consultation, he has given us the opportunity to work with some of the leading specialists in the country. Dr. Popp is both personable and professional. He always greets us with a smile and reassures us with his calm demeanor. He also works closely with Kya’s occupational therapist to ensure that she gains the maximum use of her upper extremities. We consider ourselves fortunate to have Dr. Popp as a part of Kya’s Krew!

Dr. Evan Tobin was referred to us by Dr. Beth Ellingwood. Kya was constantly getting ear infections. For a typical child, ear infections are uncomfortable, for Kya they are debilitating. She is unable to expel fluids by spitting, causing the fluids to build-up which causes her to choke unless she is sitting in an upright position. When Kya gets ear infections, it is necessary to monitor her breathing at all times. Dr. Tobin was immediately concerned, as Kya was unable to open her mouth more than half an inch. He referred us to a specialist, who was able to create a special retainer for her mouth that would widen the opening. Since that time, we have consulted with Dr. Tobin again, about the possibility of getting ear-tubes for Kya. We will make the decision after Kya undergoes additional tests. He does not hesitate to order tests, to ensure that the best plan of action is implemented. We respect and appreciate how thorough he is. Dr. Tobin has a wonderful bedside manner. He goes out of his way to support and reassure parents, making even his most opinionated patients happy. Kya last left his office with a pair of gag glasses, a stars and stripes pen and a load of stickers : ). He was a welcome addition to Kya’s Krew!!

Dr. Ellingwood was referred to us by a family member, whose child was her patient. Unsure of how receptive this physician would be about Kya’s condition, we were apprehensive about our first meeting. To our amazement, Dr. Ellingwood welcomed our family and the challenges that Kya’s condition would present with a positive and proactive attitude. We were reassured that Kya was important to her and any issues that she could not address, she would seek assistance from knowledgeable colleagues. Since being in Dr. Ellingwood’s care, Kya has seen the best specialists that Columbus has to offer. Arthrogryposis is an umbrella term for numerous conditions. Dr. Ellingwood has faced each condition head-on. She has supplied us with adaptive breathing equipment for our home as well as reassurance that we can reach her anytime we need assistance. Dr. Beth Ellingwood is an invaluable member of Kya’s Krew!

We were introduced to Dr. Klamar when Kya was 2 weeks and 5 days old! We were still extremely shocked by Kya’s diagnosis of Arthrogryposis and what it would mean for our baby girl. Dr. Klamar introduced himself, examined Kya and sat down, as if he had no other patients to see that day. He went over our potential treatment options and the ways in which he could assist us. Together, we mapped out goals to assist Kya in reaching her maximum potential. Since then, he has seen her through more than 10 successful surgeries, weekly physical therapy and numerous cast and splint applications. We thoroughly appreciate Dr. Klamar’s straight forward approach, willingness to listen to our concerns and continued information about the best methods of treatment for Kya. Dr. Klamar’s professionalism and bedside manner are to be commended. He has assisted us in enabling Kya to take her first steps in July of 2005. We will continue to take steps with Dr. Klamar to meet all of Kya’s goals!

My family is very fortunate to have Cody as Kya’s Occupational Therapist. Our entire family has benefited from her patience and professionalism. It is challenging to find information about Kya’s condition and Cody has taken the time to educate us about the most beneficial exercises to help her reach her maximum physical potential. Cody consults with Dr. Popp regularly, to ensure that Kya’s therapy regimen is challenging and fulfills Kya’s goals. She has created a hinge for Kya’s left arm that will assist her in eating and brushing her teeth independently. Cody’s help has been invaluable! She is a key member of Kya’s Krew. We look forward to continuing to work with Cody towards Kya’s goals of independence!

“Ms. Jennie”, as Kya calls her, has played an intrical role in Kya’s progress. Jennie has become so familiar with Kya that she can base their weekly workout on seeing her for only a few moments. She is extremely gentle, but demands the best effort that Kya can put forth. Jennie consults with Dr. Klamar to ensure that their goals for Kya are compatible. Jennie’s hard work and persistence has contributed to Kya being able to walk with the assistance of a pony walker. Each week, Ms. Jennie contributes to our common goal of assisting Kya to reach her full physical potential. She teaches us home exercises and techniques to ensure Kya’s success. Jennie has also been an advocate in getting some of Kya’s home equipment, such as a giraffe stander, the pony walker and most recently a bath chair. She is greatly appreciated and a highly valued member of Kya’s Krew!
